2023 Call for Resources and Case Studies: Net Zero on Campus
SDSN, Climateworks Centre, and Monash University have released a Net Zero on Campus Guide for Universities and Colleges to Accelerate Climate Action, accompanied by a provisional online toolkit. This guide aims to enable colleges and universities to accelerate the planning and implementation of net zero strategies.
The accompanying online toolkit features an initial set of inspiring and diverse case studies of emission reduction initiatives that have already been put into practice by institutions around the world. The online toolkit also provides a wide array of resources that can support decarbonization efforts on college and university campuses.
Following the Net Zero on Campus Guide’s release, SDSN is launching a call for both resources and case studies to help capture the rapidly expanding work of colleges and universities in decarbonization, and the amazing diversity and innovation of approaches. The new resources and case studies will be added to the online toolkit on a rolling basis after a review process.
Resources and case studies can cover one or more of the following areas:
- Energy: Cases related to the reduction of energy demand or the support of renewable energy generation.
- Mobility: Cases that reduce the reliance on private vehicles or travel in general or cases that promote sustainable means of transportation or the reduction of mobility emissions.
- Facilities: Cases related to the replacing of carbon and energy intensive equipment, establishing green laboratories, and retrofitting campus buildings.
- Waste and Recycling: Cases where a circular economy or material recovery strategies were implemented.
- Value Chain: Cases related to Scope 3 emissions in the context of campus procurement.
- Beyond Campus Operations: Cases where a college or university supports decarbonization efforts, for example as an amplifier of change, empowering students, or by encouraging net zero aligned education, research, and innovation.
Resources must be submitted via email to info@unsdsn.org with the name, link, and a brief description of the resource in English. Case studies must be submitted through THIS FORM in English. Resources and case studies can be submitted on a rolling basis, and will be reviewed and published quarterly.
We will screen all submitted case studies for completeness and verifiability. We will then select the case studies to be featured on the toolkit based on the innovativeness of their approach, the extent of their impact (in terms of an absolute or relative emissions reduction), potential for replicability and scaling up in other university contexts, and the conciseness and clarity of the case study information submitted.
We will inform submitters of the outcomes of the selection process at the end of each quarter (March, June, September, and December) and will work with submitters of selected case studies to finalize uploading to the toolkit.
