Advancing Sustainable Development in Romania Through Partnership and Leadership
Last week, María Cortés Puch, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s (SDSN) Vice President of Europe, and John Thwaites, Chair of the SDSN’s Board, traveled to Bucharest for two days of high-level meetings and discussions hosted by SDSN Romania and its home institution, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies (ASE). The visit brought together government leaders, academics, civil society representatives, and SDSN members to exchange ideas on accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shaping the agenda beyond 2030.
Engaging with Romanian Leadership
A key highlight of the visit was a meeting at the Romanian Parliament, made possible through the generous support of László Borbély, State Counsellor for Sustainable Development, former Minister for Environment, Chair of SDSN Romania, and one of Europe's leading advocates for SDG implementation.
The SDSN delegation learned about Romania's national sustainable development efforts and the institutional mechanisms supporting them. During the visit, participants also had the privilege of meeting former President Emil Constantinescu, a central figure in Romania's democratic transition. The encounter provided a powerful reminder of the importance of democratic leadership, international cooperation, and long-term vision in advancing sustainable development.
Learning from Romania's Consultative Council for Sustainable Development
The visit also included a meeting with the Romanian Consultative Council for Sustainable Development. The innovative platform brings together experts and civil society organizations to advise government institutions on sustainable development priorities.
Particularly inspiring was the Council's role in supporting evidence-based policymaking, including the preparation of an annual SDG progress report presented to Parliament. This model demonstrates how governments can create meaningful channels for stakeholder engagement while strengthening accountability and transparency around SDG implementation.
Universities at the Center of Sustainable Development
The SDSN delegation also met with leadership at the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, the host institution of SDSN Romania. Discussions with Professor Marius Profiroiu, Vice-Rector for International Affairs, and SDSN Romania Co-Chair Eden Mamut highlighted the university's strong commitment to advancing sustainable development through research, education, and international collaboration.
This was followed by a broader dialogue involving representatives from SDSN member institutions, academia, government, and civil society. Participants explored pathways to accelerate SDG implementation, strengthen cross-sector partnerships, and contribute to emerging discussions on the post-2030 sustainable development agenda.
Looking Ahead
Throughout the visit, a recurring theme emerged: the important role of universities and international knowledge networks in fostering cooperation, dialogue, and peace in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment. Additionally, the visit underscored the strength of SDSN Romania as a platform for collaboration and innovation in sustainable development.
