Global Schools Launches Case-study Guidebook
Global Schools, an initiative of SDSN, is excited to launch a guidebook titled, “ Practicing Education for Sustainable Development: Case Study Guide for Educators, Volume 2. ” The release is slated to debut at the 2024 ECOSOC Partnership Forum side event centered around this year's theme: “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels.”
Amanda Abrom, Co-Author and Global Schools Director says, "We are extremely proud to launch this guide featuring the incredible work of teachers, school leaders, and students within the Global Schools community. Their work embodies excellence in education and a commitment to integrating innovative education for sustainable development practices into their schools. We are excited to continue Global Schools' work in providing knowledge, practical resources, and inspiration to our network and beyond."
Serving as a testament to innovation, leadership, and collective action, the guidebook showcases how Global Schools Advocates throughout the world incorporate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into their curriculum, school-wide practices, and communities.
Within the guidebook are the experiences of 30+ Global Schools Advocates in the September 2021 - February 2022 cohort, and detailed explorations of their SDG-related projects and activities conducted in 15+ countries. The guide provides a synopsis of ESD lessons, activities, and implementation strategies for stakeholders in primary and secondary education fields; summarizes school-wide strategies and lessons learned; and celebrates the achievements of Global Schools Advocates. As said by Global Schools Content Lead, Melissa Pritchard, “ Not only does [the guide] give in-depth information for how advocates structured their projects, but commentary explaining ways they managed challenges including COVID, time and resource constraints, and support from leadership . The guide is intended to help and support other teachers looking for ways to implement ESD and the SDGs in their classroom and school community. ”

Hear from some of the featured Global Schools Advocates here:
“Schools may not be the first thought that comes to mind as organizations that could bring impactful changes to sustainability. However, there are millions of K12 students around the globe, and together with their parents, teachers and other stakeholders, the K12 school ecosystem has the capability to become a significant catalyst for community transformation toward sustainability.” - Serafin Cristobal, Global Schools Advocate, Hong Kong
“Becoming a Global Schools Advocate and mentor to other teachers who went on to become advocates has been a wonderfully enriching development in my career as an educator. It has seen me develop a network of school & community partnerships facilitating hundreds of students becoming involved in 'Caring for Country' Sustainability projects in the biodiversity hotspot of the Southwest cape of Western Australia.” - Geoffrey Holt, Global Schools Advocate, Australia
“Introducing my students to sustainable development by including the SDGs into my teaching of chemistry, and establishing an SDG club, improved my students' academic skills; it enabled [their] critical thinking and problem-solving skills from which they produced projects that addressed global environmental challenges such as waste and climate change. These skills have helped my students and school gain state and national recognition.” - Chilaka Lydia Chinonye, Global Schools Advocate, Nigeria
“Seth Anandram Jaipuria School's unique morning assemblies champion the SDGs, while teachers wholeheartedly integrate them into daily lesson plans. Remarkably, community service initiatives extend beyond [the school], fostering quality education in underprivileged schools through arts, computers, and infrastructure revamping.” -Pankaj Rathore, Global Schools Advocate, India
“ESD is the right pathway in achieving other SDGs, and the more we all pay attention to this, the more the world will actualize other SDGs goals.” - Oluwasegun Ogunsakin, Global Schools Advocate, Nigeria
“Drawing inspiration from UN comics, our journey extended to a polluted wetland where students actively participated in a cleanup, gaining insights into the diverse species inhabiting the area. The project united local environmental organizations and the school community, involving parents, teachers, and staff in fostering environmental awareness.” -Stephanie Arias Catalán, Global Schools Advocate, Chile
