Reflecting on Success: The SDSN Networks Chairs Meeting in New York

On September 18, 2024, the SDSN Networks Chairs gathered in New York City ahead of the UN Summit of the Future. The meeting underscored the robust efforts and innovative solutions led by Networks globally to advance sustainable development, particularly in urban settings. It served as a vital opportunity for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and envisioning the future of sustainable development across the globe.

A Collaborative Vision for Cities and Universities

The meeting featured presentations from Network Chairs, emphasizing the critical synergy between universities and cities in addressing urban sustainability. Maria Cortes-Puch, VP of the Networks Program, introduced Pathfinder 2, an initiative to help cities monitor health co-benefits of climate actions, while Leire Pajín, Chair of SDSN Spain, presented UnicitiES 2030, which connects university students with city councils to co-create solutions to urban climate challenges. Francisco Magno, representing SDSN Philippines, emphasized bridging science and policy in urban climate efforts, while SDSN Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific’s John Thwaites advocated for moving beyond “marketing sustainability” towards actionable urban plans.

Tackling Data and Resource Challenges

During the meeting, data scarcity emerged as a significant shared challenge, particularly in urban sustainability planning. Eden Mamut of SDSN Romania and Miguel Ruiz Cabañas of SDSN Mexico highlighted the importance of reliable data for local governance. John Barimo of SDSN Ireland advocated for stronger university support for municipalities, while Maria João Rauch of SDSN Portugal reinforced the need for multi-stakeholder partnerships in data management and governance.

Empowering Sustainable Research

Research on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) alignment also took center stage. Janet Hering of SDSN Switzerland and Phoebe Koundouri of SDSN Greece emphasized accelerating impactful research through interdisciplinary frameworks and fostering partnerships with policymakers, civil society, and the private sector. Tahl Kestin of SDSN Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific introduced a forthcoming guide to help universities align research with the SDGs, underscoring the role of academia in creating transformative knowledge.

Bridging Cultures and Indigenous Knowledge

Virgílio Viana of SDSN Amazon advocated for initiatives that recognize indigenous knowledge and cultural contributions. Discussions around the Pact for the Future spotlighted the need to integrate indigenous perspectives into the SDG framework. This resonated with the SDSN leaders from Australia and the United States, who emphasized the SDSN’s role in bringing indigenous wisdom to the forefront of sustainable development.

Fostering Innovation Through the Arts

The intersection of arts and sustainability was explored by Networks such as Ireland and Italy. Michael Alcorn of SDSN Ireland showcased Reach '24, a festival linking art and climate awareness. Patrizia Lombardi of SDSN Italy highlighted the power of art in translating complex sustainability messages to broader audiences, strengthening societal engagement.

Future Directions and Collective Ambitions

Building on these dynamic discussions, the meeting set a clear path for the coming period, with a strong commitment to thematic initiatives such as indigenous knowledge, youth engagement, and the arts. These priorities will drive deeper collaboration across the SDSN Networks, enhancing shared learning and impact. María Cortes-Puch underscored the SDSN's commitment to expanding its influence by actively leveraging the distinct strengths and resources of each Network, aiming for a more cohesive, impactful global effort toward sustainable development.
