Science Panel for the Amazon to Launch Inaugural Youth Advisory Committee
[New York, USA, June 17, 2024] — The Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) is proud to announce the establishment of the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), an initiative aimed at engaging the next generation of scientists and young leaders dedicated to the conservation and sustainable development of the Amazon region. This committee will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the SPA’s efforts to conserve and advance sustainable development in the Amazon reach a wider, more diverse audience and are imbued with the priorities and innovative ideas of young scientists and leaders.
The YAC will consist of young leaders and emerging scientists from various disciplines and backgrounds, all committed to the conservation of the Amazon. By involving youth in critical discussions and decision-making processes, the SPA aims to foster innovative solutions and fresh perspectives on conservation and sustainable development challenges. This initiative underscores the importance of intergenerational collaboration in addressing the pressing issues facing the Amazon.
Members of the YAC will have the opportunity to spearhead initiatives that raise awareness about the Amazon, the SPA’s work, and its policy-relevant recommendations. Additionally, they will enhance their professional development by collaborating closely with fellow youth leaders and esteemed scientists of the Panel. This hands-on experience will empower YAC members to help expand sustainable practices in their communities and beyond. The committee will also serve as a platform for youth to voice their concerns and ideas, ensuring that their perspectives are included in the SPA’s initiatives.
The SPA is seeking dynamic young scientists and leaders, aged 18 to 30, to serve on the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) for an initial term of two years. These individuals will exhibit robust analytical and communication skills and demonstrate a strong commitment to the SPA’s values and to working for youth rights, conservation, and sustainable development.
Emma Torres, SDSN Vice President of Americas and the SPA Strategic Coordinator, states: “The Amazon, the largest tropical forest in the world, with immense biodiversity and cultures not only is essential for the well-being of the eight countries of the region, but also plays a critical role in the earth cycle. The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is a key initiative by the Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) to harness the energy, creativity, and innovative ideas of young leaders and scientists dedicated to advancing conservation and sustainable development in the Amazon. By integrating the perspectives, commitment and leadership of the next generation we aspire to advance sustainable solutions to the challenges facing the Amazon. The YAC will be instrumental in amplifying these voices, fostering intergenerational collaboration, and ensuring that our actions today lay a strong foundation for a sustainable future.”
