SDSN Mexico supports Mexico's Third National Voluntary Review

For the third time, Mexico presented its Third National Voluntary Review to the United Nations last July, a report that presents the progress and perspectives on the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda in the country. On this occasion, the report incorporates the effects of the COVID-19 emergency on the achievement of the SDGs, and reflecting on the priorities and possibilities for action in Mexico.

On this occasion, the Mexican Report presented in a timely manner the actions carried out by the different sectors of society, the private sector, academia, the United Nations System, civil society organizations, as well as the Federal Government, the Legislative Branch and subnational governments.

SDSN Mexico coordinated the elaboration of the report of the Mexican academic sector, in order to present the advances in the sector on the identification and development of solutions in the matter, promoting education on sustainable development and the exchange of ideas to promote multi-sectorial solutions. As part of these actions, SDSN Mexico underscored its work promoting multisectorial alliances, as well as its flagship projects: Bank of Projects (Banco de Proyectos), SDG Experts (ExpertODS), SDGs Platform, and youth mobilization through the SDSN Youth Mexico. Also, SDSN Mexico collected information on the actions and progress of the social innovation sector in Mexico.

From the Academic Sector, the following activities stand out:

  • Participation of various experts from SDSN Mexico in the 2030 Legislative Strategy.
  • Mexican Academic institutions are part of at least 6 regional and international inter-institutional networks, highlighting SDSN Mexico.
  • Main SDGs impacted by academic initiatives: SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 7 and SDG 13.
  • The network has more than 70 member institutions nationwide, and of these, 64% have already transformed their infrastructures to ones with a sustainable approach, highlighting the provision of more green spaces, the use of clean energy, the use of sustainable construction materials and water recycling processes.

Regarding the Social Innovation sector, the impact of the sector's activities in favor of SDG 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 17 at the national level was highlighted. Similarly, some good practices in the Sector were highlighted, such as the ÉCHALE, Iluméxico and Thermy initiatives.

As part of the report, both sectors also highlighted the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their activities, as well as the remaining challenges in order to define new objectives and solutions, such as:

  • The lack of qualified teachers with the appropriate profile in terms of sustainable development within the institutions.
  • The lack of financial resources for the execution of sustainable development projects.
  • The need for adequate coordination between the different levels of government, particularly regarding the development of plans, programs, and national and local legislations with a SDG focus, for which the academic sector expressed its willingness to support and contribute with their knowledge and experience.

With these problems identified, SDSN Mexico aims to address remaining challenges and have a clear vision for the future together with well-structured objectives that seek to adequately implement the 2030 Agenda; strengthen the implemented actions and the support of the authorities to promote a committed society; and continue implementing in its educational plans a sustainable development approach to ensure that the entire educational curricula is aligned with the 17 SDGs and the 2030 Agenda.

SDSN Mexico apoya la elaboración del Tercer Informe Nacional Voluntario de México

Por tercera ocasión, México presentó en julio pasado su Tercer Informe Nacional Voluntario ante las Naciones Unidas, Informe que presenta los avances y perspectivas sobre el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostneiblede la Agenda 2030 en el país. En esta ocasión, el Informe incorpora los efectos de la emergencia del COVID-19 en el logro de los ODS, invitando a la reflexión sobre las prioridades y posibilidades de acción en Mexico.

En esta ocasión, el Informe mexicano presentó de manera puntual las acciones realizadas por los distintos sectores de la sociedad, sector privado, academia, el Sistema de las Naciones Unidas, las organizaciones de la sociedad civil, además del Gobierno Federal, Poder Legislativo y gobiernos locales.

SDSN México coordinó la elaboración del informe del sector académico mexicano, a fin de presentar los avances en el sector respecto a la identificación y desarrollo de las soluciones en la materia, promoviendo la educación en materia de desarrollo sostenible y el intercambio de ideas para promover soluciones multiactor. Como parte de dichas acciones, SDSN México destacó su trabajo promoviendo las alianzas multilactor, además de sus proyectos emblema: Banco de Proyectos, ExpertODS, Plataforma ODS, y la movilización juvenil a través del capítulo SDSN Youth México. También, SDSN México recopiló información sobre las acciones y avances del sector de innovación social en México.

Del Sector Académico se destacan las siguientes actividades:

  • Participación de diversas expertas y expertos de SDSN México en la Estrategia Legislativa 2030.
  • Las instituciones académicas forman parte de, al menos, 6 redes interinstitucionales regionales e internacionales, destacando SDSN México.
  • Principales ODS impactados por iniciativas académicas: ODS 1, ODS 2, ODS 3, ODS 4, ODS 7 y ODS 13.
  • La red cuenta con más de 70 instituciones miembro a nivel nacional, y de estás el 64% transformaron sus infraestructuras a unas con enfoque sostenible, destacando la habilitación de más espacios y áreas verdes, el uso de energías limpias, uso de materiales de construcción sostenibles y procesos de reciclaje de agua.


Por lo que respecta al sector de la Innovación Social, se destacó el impacto de las actividades del sector a favor de los ODS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 y 17 a nivel nacional. De igual manera, se destacaron algunas buenas prácticas del Sector como fueron los casos de las iniciativas ÉCHALE, Iluméxico y Thermy.

Como parte del informe, ambos sectores también destacaron los efectos de la pandemia de COVID-19 en sus actividades, así como los retos a los cuales se les debe de prestar atención para así definir nuevos objetivos y soluciones, entre ellos:


  • La falta de docentes calificados y con el perfil adecuado en materia de desarrollo sostenible al interior de las instituciones.
  • La falta de recursos financieros para la ejecución de proyectos en desarrollo sostenible;
  • La necesidad de contar con una adecuada coordinación entre los diferentes niveles de gobierno, en particular respecto al desarrollo de planes, programas y legislaciones nacionales, estatales y municipales con enfoque en los ODS, para lo cual el Sector académico se manifestó dispuesto a apoyar y contribuir con su conocimiento y experiencia.


Con estos problemas identificados, SDSN México busca atender los principales retos, al tiempo de tener una visión a futuro clara junto con objetivos bien estructurados que busquen implementar de manera adecuada la Agenda 2030; fortalecer las acciones ya aplicadas y el apoyo de las autoridades para impulsar una ciudadanía comprometida; y continuar incrementando en sus planes educativos la oferta académica con enfoque en desarrollo sostenible para asegurar que toda la currículo educativa esté alineada con los 17 ODS y la Agenda 2030.
