The SDSN and JICA Ogata Research Institute Host Workshop on the Post-2030 Agenda Indicator Framework Joint Research

On July 30, 2026, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) jointly convened a hybrid workshop at Sunway University, Malaysia, to kick off their joint research initiative to develop concrete recommendations to strengthen the post-2030 Agenda indicator framework. The final report summarizing the outcome from this two-year partnership is expected to be released by 2028.

Dr. Akihiko Tanaka, President of JICA, and Professor Jeffrey Sachs, President of the SDSN, provided opening remarks at the workshop. Close to 100 experts and practitioners from over twenty countries participated in this four-hour hybrid workshop. Participants included members of the Independent Group of Scientists for the UN Global Sustainable Development Report 2027 (GSDR), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the High-Level Expert Group on Beyond GDP (HLEG), and other key academics and public officials.

The discussion, moderated by Dr. Guillaume Lafortune, Vice President of the SDSN and Head of SDSN Asia, and Dr. Ichiro Sato, Executive Senior Research Fellow at JICA, focused on three major areas to improve the post-2030 Agenda indicator framework: (1) identify key data challenges and opportunities from new technologies; (2) simplify the indicator framework; and (3) improve the effectiveness and operational use of monitoring systems at all levels. Insights shared during the kick-off workshop will inform and guide the next steps of the SDSN and JICA Ogata Research Institute’s joint research.
