The Terrace: A New Climbing Wall to Promote Sports and Adventure Tourism in La Paz

The Sustainable Development Solutions Network - Bolivia (SDSN Bolivia) and its host institution, Universidad Privada Boliviana (UPB), opened an urban climbing wall “La Terraza,” or “The Terrace,” to encourage climbing and promote adventure tourism in La Paz, Bolivia.

Located on the terrace of the UPB Graduate building on 5 de Obrajes Street, “La Terraza” offers climbing enthusiasts the opportunity to witness spectacular views of the urban landscape and imposing mountains, all under a breathtaking sky panorama.

This space is open to the public free of charge, but climbers must be an accredited “Climbing Instructor” or “Lead Climber.” Accreditation was offered in July 2024, through which climbers were rigorously evaluated by a committee of experts.

“We are very excited to offer this space to the community, and we hope it becomes a meeting point for sports and adventure lovers,” said Lykke Andersen, Executive Director of SDSN Bolivia. She noted that new accreditation opportunities will be offered in the future.

Oscar Molina, Pro Rector of UPB, highlighted the relevance of this project for youth in La Paz: "This project not only promotes the practice of climbing, but also promotes adventure tourism, enriching the city's recreational offer."

With this initiative, UPB and SDSN Bolivia seek to contribute to sustainable tourism development in La Paz, while offering a unique experience for both residents and visitors.
