Global Strategies for Low-Carbon Iron and Steel Production

There is a significant opportunity to reduce emissions from the iron and steel industry by 2030, as two-thirds of existing plants will require refurbishment and reinvestment this decade. China and India, given the scale of their industries and growth trajectories, offer unique potential for financial and technical decarbonization solutions. However, there is no single “silver bullet” to decarbonize the sector at the scale required. Meaningful emissions reductions will depend on deploying a range of tailored low-carbon and industrial technologies, such as green hydrogen and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), alongside improved operational practices, increased energy efficiency, reduced raw material consumption, and greater use of scrap recycling.
