Hydrogen Technology
Hydrogen has the potential to play a key role in the decarbonization of “hard-to-abate sectors,” such as energy-intensive industries and long-haul transport. Renewable hydrogen, however, is technically difficult to produce, and thus, 99% of hydrogen production still comes from fossil sources. Until renewable hydrogen is ready to be produced on a large scale, low-carbon hydrogen can be used to facilitate the energy transition. Hydrogen deployment faces barriers in terms of infrastructure, commercial risks, government support, as well as safety and environmental concerns. However, with uniform global frameworks and a rise in renewable energy generation capacity, the adoption and deployment of safe and clean hydrogen can be accelerated.
