SDSN Great Lakes mobilizes local knowledge to advance viable solutions to sustainable development challenges in the Great Lakes. The network, hosted by the University of Rwanda, and established in 2014, includes the following countries: Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia. Key focus areas include Ending poverty and hunger, quality lifelong education, SDGs awareness through public lectures, outreach activities, and local solutions to address development challenges in the Great Lakes region to leverage new technologies and consciously work to advance the SDGs.

Education for Sustainable Development Conference Convenes Multi-sector Stakeholders

SDSN Great Lakes, in collaboration with the College of Education, hosted the 1st International Conference for Re-shaping Education for Sustainable Development. Its theme was "Re-thinking Holistic Education for the Fourth Industrial Revolution" and included 16 thematic areas. Held in March 2023, the event was attended by over 300 researchers, scholars, academicians, educational practitioners, policy-makers and postgraduate students, at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village (KCEV).

Network and Student Association Partners Address Local Development Challenges

SDSN Great Lakes Youth has been partnering with university student-led clubs and associations to promote and involve students in local initiatives to address development challenges starting near their respective campuses. Many of these activities included disposing of electronic waste, planting trees, cleaning roads and supporting vulnerable families through monthly community work.
