Uganda

national Network
Region: Africa

SDSN Uganda, hosted by Makerere University and established in 2019, mobilizes its members in Uganda and leverages their strengths to help realize the SDGs. Key focus areas include agriculture and food systems; health; natural resources and ecosystem health; renewable energy; sustainable cities; and climate compatible development. Activities include SDG localization by working closely with the Ugandan Government on their Voluntary National Review and capacity building on issues related to its key focus areas.

Network Hosts

The Network Participates in Governmental SDG Coordination Meetings

SDSN Uganda works closely with the SDGs Secretariat of the Uganda government, hosted in the office of the Prime Minister. The network participates in the SDG Coordination meetings and supports the government's Voluntary National Review (VNR) stakeholder engagement processes.

The Network and FAO Support Climate Change Knowledge Management

In partnership with FAO, Makerere University is supporting climate change knowledge management. Its aim is to build the capacity of Uganda's Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry (MAAIF), Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) and 19 district local governments to generate and disseminate information and knowledge on climate risks and emerging adaptation options, as well as sharing best practices at district and national levels. It has developed the Climate Change Adaptation Knowledge Base (CCAKB) and established Knowledge Management and Communication Team (KMCTs) in 19 districts, and trained over 100 participants in knowledge management.

Research Collaboration Seeks to Inform Policy on Public Health Crises

SDSN Uganda focuses on SDG 3 (good health and well-being), and SDG 13 (climate action). In collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Makerere University School of Public Health, SDSN Uganda is implementing a research project titled "Building Partnerships for Resilience: Strengthening Responses to Health Shocks from the Grassroots," aimed at developing and strengthening international partnerships to conduct research to inform policy and practice that improves effective community-led responses to public-health crises.

The Network Host is Preparing its First Sustainability Report

SDSN Uganda supports the incorporation of the SDGs in teaching, learning, and research in network universities. SDSN Uganda is preparing the Makerere University Sustainable Development Report (SDR) 2024 to document sustainability in teaching and learning and the university's contribution to achieving the SDGs.
