Greece

national Network
Region: Europe

SDSN Greece, hosted by the Athens University of Economics and Business, the Political Economy of Sustainable Development Lab, and ATHENA Research Center, and established in 2017, mobilizes its members in Greece and leverages their strengths to help realize the SDGs. Key focus areas include (1) Raising SDGs awareness, with a particular focus on climate action, through active engagement in regional/global high-level processes (e.g. hosting the Global Climate Hub; leading the SEAS initiative; and actively participating in COP28); via the reports issued by SDSN’s European Green Deal Senior Working Group, and by organizing and participating in high-level conferences such as the annual Sustainability Summit for South-East Europe and the Mediterranean; (2) Providing Capacity Building through professional seminars and targeted workshops on ESG and sustainable development; and (3) Supporting innovation via participation in EU-funded projects and accelerators (among others, Climate-KIC, Arsinoe, Impetus and Catalyst).

The Network Joins the FABLE Consortium and Develops Country Detailed Report

SDSN Greece joined the FABLE Consortium in June 2023 and participates with a team of researchers from the Alliance of Excellence for Research and Innovation on Αephoria (AE4RIA) chaired by Prof. Koundouri. The FABLE team in Greece uses the FABLE calculator to provide projections for the country’s performance in Sustainable Agriculture, Energy, Food Security and Biodiversity for the 2020-2050 period. The process is embodied in the global projections of the FABLE consortium through the Scenathons process and will culminate in a detailed country report in 2024.

Network Leadership Heads SDSN Global Climate Hub

The Global Climate Hub was launched in July 2023, with the mission of providing science-based recommendations for combating the climate crisis and preventing further deterioration. It includes expertise from SDSN members under Prof. Koundouri's leadership, co-chair of SDSN Greece. The GCH is hosted by AUEB and the Athena Research & Innovation Center while the Academy of Athens and the Technical University of Denmark are two of the most important co-founding institutions. At COP 28, the GCH launched a report to present its work on net zero pathways.

Host Institutions Offer Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance Courses

Both host institutions of SDSN Greece have run several ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) professional courses, including one titled "ESG, SDGs and Sustainable Finance," in collaboration with PwC Greece, and one on ESG Instruments & Strategy, in collaboration with the Global Compact Greece. The co-chairs of the network, Prof. Koundouri and Prof. Papandreou, are also the scientific directors of the courses held at AUEB and PESD respectively.

The Network Participates in Research Projects to Foster SDG Implementation

SDSN Greece focused on SDG 13. AUEB and Athena RC currently participate in 12 EU funded international research projects on sustainable pathways, climate neutrality and resilience. SDSN Greece also focused on SDG 4. PESD currently leads the Erasmus Project SDGs for Universities. SDG4U fosters the implementation of SDGs in higher education by embedding them across teaching, research, operations, and community outreach.
