The Science Panel for the Amazon (SPA) is the first high-level science initiative dedicated to the Amazon. Established in September 2019 and officially launched in July 2020, the SPA brings together over 300 scientists from Amazonian countries and global partners to produce evidence-based knowledge that informs policies and actions for a sustainable and resilient Amazon.

The SPA launched the groundbreaking Amazon Assessment Report 2021 at the UNFCCC COP26, widely known as the “encyclopedia of the Amazon.” Since 2021, the Panel has released a wide range of policy briefs, statements, and white papers.

In 2025, the SPA released the Amazon Assessment Report 2025 – Connectivity of the Amazon for a Living Planet, focused on the ecological, sociocultural, and economic connections that sustain the region.

In partnership with the SDG Academy, WWF, and the World Bank, with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the SPA also hosts The Living Amazon: Science, Cultures, and Sustainability in Practice, a massive open online course (MOOC) on the Amazon’s ecosystems, challenges, and solutions. The Panel also produces the Conversations for The Amazon We Want podcast, featuring intergenerational dialogues led by SPA’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), highlighting stories, knowledge, and perspectives from those working to conserve the Amazon.

By bringing together the world’s leading scientists, synthesizing knowledge, and fostering dialogue with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, the SPA continues to strengthen scientific research and informed policy decisions across the region, contributing to sustainable and equitable development in the Amazon.
